News Photos, Video and Broadcast

University Communications Media Relations can assist journalists with filming and photography on university property, including helping to arrange for locations and access when permission to film or photograph has been granted. General rules for journalists

  1. Journalists must notify the Office of University Communications or a school or institute media relations office to obtain permission to come onto Stanford University property. Contact Luisa Rapport, University Communications External Communications, at lrapport@stanford.edu. Whenever possible, we request 24 hours’ notice.
  2. Journalists must adhere to the university’s privacy policies. No one at Stanford can be filmed without their permission, except at public events to which the public and media have been invited.
  3. In accordance with the university’s privacy policies, members of the media are prohibited from entering student residences or dining halls. Members of the media are prohibited in all residential areas of the university, including student residences and the surrounding faculty neighborhoods without prior permission from University Communications.
  4. Journalists must obtain prior permission in order to film or photograph in any interior spaces on university property. This includes administration and office buildings, classrooms, laboratories, libraries, and dining facilities.
  5. Journalists may not conduct “person-on-the-street” interviews at Stanford without assistance from Media Relations. Such interviews, including approaching students, faculty, and staff members, are allowed only in White Plaza.
  6. Television journalists are allowed to do their live reports or recorded “stand-ups” only at the top of The Oval.
  7. Journalists working at Stanford are expected to carry appropriate credentials and should be prepared to produce them upon request by university staff.
  8. News and professional film and photography are prohibited in the Main Quadrangle and Memorial Court.
  9. Journalists are prohibited from parking satellite trucks anywhere on university property without permission from University Communications Media Relations, for news purposes, or from Stanford Athletics, for sporting events.
  10. Stanford reserves the right to request that media organizations leave university property for failing to observe these rules.

Photographs related to recent press releases may be obtained from media contact(s) for the press release. To obtain other photographs of Stanford individuals and events for publication in news media, books and journals, please contact the News Service Library via this form.

News Service photo policy

Photographs provided by the Stanford News Service are to be used, with appropriate credit, for editorial purposes only. Flopping, altering or otherwise embellishing the photos in any way that changes the photographs’ editorial content is prohibited. Images provided for Web use must be resized to low resolution. Permission is for one-time use only. Supplied image files must be deleted after use.

Video b-roll

Filming of b-roll, especially of the Main Quadrangle and other iconic areas of the university, is prohibited for privacy reasons and to avoid disruption of academic, research or residential life. Members of the media may request access to download high-quality, university-produced b-roll of the campus by contacting Gordon Gurley of Stanford Video at ggurley@stanford.edu.

Broadcast facilities

Stanford has broadcast studio facilities available to the news media on a first-come, first-served basis for interviewing faculty and staff. We have the capacity to transmit by the LTN Global Network for television and by ISDN and IP for radio for live broadcast feeds. For more information, contact Stanford Video at 650-725-4872.
